Summary

Formed as a New York City hardcore band in 1981, Beastie Boys struck an unlikely path to global hip hop superstardom。 Here is their story, told for the first time in the words of the band。 Adam "AD-ROCK" Horovitz and Michael "Mike D" Diamond offer revealing and very funny accounts of their transition from teenage punks to budding rappers; their early collaboration with Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin; the almost impossible-to-fathom overnight success of their debut studio album Licensed to Ill; that album's messy fallout; their break with Def Jam, move to Los Angeles, and rebirth as musicians and social activists, with the genre-defying masterpiece Paul's Boutique。 For more than twenty years, this band has had a wide-ranging and lasting influence on popular culture。

With a style as distinctive and eclectic as a Beastie Boys album, Beastie Boys Book upends the typical music memoir。 Alongside the band narrative you will find rare photos, original illustrations, a cookbook by chef Roy Choi, a graphic novel, a map of Beastie Boys' New York, mixtape playlists, pieces by guest contributors, and many more surprises。

I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised。 At first, I was worried that this would just be the long form of "Beastie Boys Story" on Apple TV+。 Thankfully I was wrong and the book was great。 The audiobook has a bunch of different celebrities narrating the short essays which were really fun and unexpected。 This book made me love the Beastie Boys more。 I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised。 At first, I was worried that this would just be the long form of "Beastie Boys Story" on Apple TV+。 Thankfully I was wrong and the book was great。 The audiobook has a bunch of different celebrities narrating the short essays which were really fun and unexpected。 This book made me love the Beastie Boys more。 。。。more

This book feels Beastie Boys。 Relentlessly fun but with undertones of true vulnerability and responsibility。 Unique and experimental in a way that seems totally off the cuff but only because so much work went into making it feel that way。 And most of all personal in the same way as their albums, like these guys are your friends you've known for years catching up。 It's a gift。 This book feels Beastie Boys。 Relentlessly fun but with undertones of true vulnerability and responsibility。 Unique and experimental in a way that seems totally off the cuff but only because so much work went into making it feel that way。 And most of all personal in the same way as their albums, like these guys are your friends you've known for years catching up。 It's a gift。 。。。more

I really love Beastie Boys and thoroughly enjoyed this book。 It tells their full story, from the beginning to now。 These guys went through a lot together and have a special love for each other。 I loved hearing about their experiences as young artists。

I listened to the audio book and followed along with an ebook from the public library。 One of the most entertaining, engaging and fun audio books I've listened too。 Stories, song lists, guest appearances, tributes- all read by a diverse cast of celebrities, artists, rappers, directors and of course Mike D and Adrock themselves。 It is a story filled with growth and insight, emotional depth, punk rock and hip hop history and peppered with flair, flavor and friendship。 Like a memoir, a great podcas I listened to the audio book and followed along with an ebook from the public library。 One of the most entertaining, engaging and fun audio books I've listened too。 Stories, song lists, guest appearances, tributes- all read by a diverse cast of celebrities, artists, rappers, directors and of course Mike D and Adrock themselves。 It is a story filled with growth and insight, emotional depth, punk rock and hip hop history and peppered with flair, flavor and friendship。 Like a memoir, a great podcast, a favorite mixtape, a deep conversation and a monster hang out with old friends all in one。 。。。more

A wonderful dense layout of pictures, comics, flyers, recipes, notes, and a lot of etc。 I would encourage having you tube up to be able to follow along with all of the music mentioned in the book。

HIGHLY suggest this book for anyone who grew up listening to Beastie Boys。 And even more so- the audio book- it’s read by both Ad-Rock and Mike D along with an A-List line up of celebrities。 So entertaining! The book hit me just where I needed right away as Ad-Rock and Mike D talk about their early teen years listening to as much music as they could- going to as many shows as they could and buying as many records as they could。 I was a teen who lived to go to shows, spent her Saturdays scouring u HIGHLY suggest this book for anyone who grew up listening to Beastie Boys。 And even more so- the audio book- it’s read by both Ad-Rock and Mike D along with an A-List line up of celebrities。 So entertaining! The book hit me just where I needed right away as Ad-Rock and Mike D talk about their early teen years listening to as much music as they could- going to as many shows as they could and buying as many records as they could。 I was a teen who lived to go to shows, spent her Saturdays scouring used record stores for good finds, and reading magazines and fanzines about my favorite musical artists for hours。 So listening to them talk about the punk, hardcore and post-punk scene was a serious trip down memory lane for me! Then their story segue ways into how they went from hardcore music fans- to starting their own band- to ultimately just meeting and hanging out with the right cast of characters in NYC that made Beastie Boys- Beastie Boys。 The stories that span their 30 some odd year career are both hilarious and mind-blowing- That really happened?? But ultimately it’s a love letter to their dear band mate MCA who passed away in 2012 and a testament to their friendship and just a love of making music together。 Amazing story- amazing book。A few chapters were awkward on the audio book- like Spike Jonze describing pictures he took because you can’t see them。 Or just lists of bands or equipment that if reading the book- you might just scan over。 But overall the audio book was amazing! 。。。more

Subtle chaos This is a great read if you lived growing up listening to the Beasties。 However following it is like watching ants move across a mound, it’s all over the place。 Good stories though。

I listened to the audiobook。 I grew up a fan of their music, so I found it interesting to hear how they got started。 My interest started to fade the further I got into the book, but I stuck with it until the end。 Including the chapter where someone described each picture that was in a chapter of photos。 As a fan of their music, I give it 4 looped samples out of 5 looped samples。

QOTD: what’s something you do that you used to think your parents were lame for doing? For me, it’s definitely listening to mostly old music。 I remember thinking, like, how can they still listen to this stuff that’s been out for 20 years? Now all of my favorite bands have been making music for at least that long 😅BOOK REVIEW: If you’re into beastie boys at all, you 💯 need to listen to this book on audio。 There are so many stories from the beginnings of rap in NYC, the 80s punk/hardcore scene and QOTD: what’s something you do that you used to think your parents were lame for doing? For me, it’s definitely listening to mostly old music。 I remember thinking, like, how can they still listen to this stuff that’s been out for 20 years? The what that this book was written can be a little overwhelming and confusing to get through, but come on。。。 it's the Beasties。 They rock my world and losing MCA was a deep cut when it happened。 However, Ad Rock and Mike D do a fantastic job paying homage to MCA and who the Beasties are and were。 Love this band, love this book, and love these guys。 The what that this book was written can be a little overwhelming and confusing to get through, but come on。。。 it's the Beasties。 They rock my world and losing MCA was a deep cut when it happened。 However, Ad Rock and Mike D do a fantastic job paying homage to MCA and who the Beasties are and were。 Love this band, love this book, and love these guys。 。。。more

Borrowed this from the library in both ebook and audio, because there are many things in the former that aren't in the latter and vice-versa (e。g。 a chapter that's in comics in the book is in prose in the audio, etc)。 So I would listen to a chapter or two, then check the book for whatever's not on audio (pictures, illustrations, etc)。 I enjoyed it—it's very quirky, very them。 I felt their love of music and New York City, their craftsmanship, their unique infectious energy, and most of all their Borrowed this from the library in both ebook and audio, because there are many things in the former that aren't in the latter and vice-versa (e。g。 a chapter that's in comics in the book is in prose in the audio, etc)。 So I would listen to a chapter or two, then check the book for whatever's not on audio (pictures, illustrations, etc)。 I enjoyed it—it's very quirky, very them。 I felt their love of music and New York City, their craftsmanship, their unique infectious energy, and most of all their enviable lifelong friendship。 Highly rec watching their documentary Beastie Boys Story after this to complete the trifecta。p。s。 I may be in the minority but I really didn't care for the celeb narrators; I would've preferred that Mike+Adam read all of it (except for the guest essays) themselves 。。。more

Actually like 4 1/2 stars。 Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the book。 The pictures, the stories, everything about it was great。 In fact, I wish it were longer, since I know there are plenty of things that got glossed over。 My only complaint is the physical quality of the book itself。 Virtually all 2-page spreads were terrible。 The publisher didn't leave enough room on the pages for the two halves to line up, so my choices were to not see everything that was printed, or to break the binding so I could Actually like 4 1/2 stars。 Don't get me wrong, I LOVED the book。 The pictures, the stories, everything about it was great。 In fact, I wish it were longer, since I know there are plenty of things that got glossed over。 My only complaint is the physical quality of the book itself。 Virtually all 2-page spreads were terrible。 The publisher didn't leave enough room on the pages for the two halves to line up, so my choices were to not see everything that was printed, or to break the binding so I could open the book even farther。 Since I didn't want it to fall apart, I just kind of lived with it。 If I pick up a second copy some time at a used book store I will most definitely re-read it and break it as necessary, or pick up a digital version。 I actually listened to the Audible version of the book and referred back to the physical book often for photos and other details。 The narration was great, especially when Adam Horovitz and Michael Diamond were reading their own words。 No, they are not professional narrators, and it showed, but their emotions often come through and that added a lot。 The other narrators were mostly very good and added some nice touches to the book。 Full disclosure- I have been an extremely casual fan of the Beastie Boys throughout most of their careers, just knowing some of their hits (although I have thought for many years that Sabotage is the greatest music video ever made)。 I have only recently begun listening to them in earnest and I regret that I missed out on their progress from the late 80's to now。 。。。more

Such a wonderful journey into the history of one of my favorite music groups。 Highly recommended to the fans of Beasties Boys。

My husband is a Beastie Boys fan but not a big reader so I bought the Audible version for us to listen on a long road trip。 It was so entertaining, made us both nostalgic for those days of making mix tapes, the guest readers were all great and helped keep it engaging and I especially loved Rosie Perez reading。 The only downside with the audio is you missing out on seeing the photos in the physical book but we both really enjoyed this audio version。

Fucking A+ material here, from the behind the scenes info, to the music technical stuff that I don't get because I'm tone deaf but I can still feel the passion, to the reading cast of the audiobook。 By the end, I wanted to cry at the untimely demise of Adam Yauch, and at the same time I was smiling feeling the love his friends/bandmates/brothers had for him and his life。 This is a Beastie Boys book, and also a tribute to MCA and his lives life's work。 Fucking A+ material here, from the behind the scenes info, to the music technical stuff that I don't get because I'm tone deaf but I can still feel the passion, to the reading cast of the audiobook。 By the end, I wanted to cry at the untimely demise of Adam Yauch, and at the same time I was smiling feeling the love his friends/bandmates/brothers had for him and his life。 This is a Beastie Boys book, and also a tribute to MCA and his lives life's work。 。。。more

I was looking forward to reading this book and was disappointed。 I skimmed most of it, it was rambling thoughts of Adam Horovitz and Mike Diamond with some ramblings from others。 They had so many interesting pictures with no credit or little caption。

I have to start with the caveat that I was never a big fan back in the day - not at all really - but I watched the documentary and found them fascinating, partly because of their obvious love for each other and partly because they have clearly grown out of their asshole phase, which is all I saw back in the day。But this audiobook! It’s crazy good。 Even for the non-fan。 The first third is a remarkably and wonderfully detailed immersion into being a teenager in New York in the 80s。 I was just lovi I have to start with the caveat that I was never a big fan back in the day - not at all really - but I watched the documentary and found them fascinating, partly because of their obvious love for each other and partly because they have clearly grown out of their asshole phase, which is all I saw back in the day。But this audiobook! It’s crazy good。 Even for the non-fan。 The first third is a remarkably and wonderfully detailed immersion into being a teenager in New York in the 80s。 I was just loving the nostalgia of it。 The chapter on mixtapes is spot on。 And then I was hooked。 My other favorite was the chapter about the character/ice cream cake Cookie Puss written by Colson Whitehead and read by a variety of voices you’ll recognize。 Laugh out loud funny。 Which is kinda the Beastie Boys approach to creativity - if it’s ridiculous and makes them laugh, they do it。 Which maybe explains how Rachel Maddow ended up reading a couple chapters on the audiobook, including one in which she’s reciting their lyrics in her MSNBC voice。 And Wanda Sykes! Jon Stewart! You just don’t know who will turn up next。 It’s masterful construction and execution and was so good, I bought the hardcover because I wanted to see the photos。 There are tons。On a serious note, I actually have an appreciation for hip hop now that I never really did before。 I had no idea the amount of work that went into choosing the right samples。 These guys, for all their fucking around, had a remarkable work ethic。 And were super creative。 And now I guess I am a fan。 What can I say? 。。。more
